Tackle Rugby Winter 2008
Tackle Rugby
Recently our Y5/6 Tackle Rugby team participated in the Barbarian’s Rugby Tournament. This is a very selective and legendary tournament and only 12 lucky primary schools from each of the Auckland regions: North Harbour, Auckland and Counties get invited. The aim of the tournament is to promote Rugby, give the kids the opportunity to have some fun and to meet some of the legends of the game. This year was the first year our school were invited and we hope to be invited again next year!
It was a fantastic day and a great introduction to the season! Our team had many new players to rugby – most of our team comprising of soccer players. We played with a lot of passion against a sizeable opposition. What we lacked in size we made up for in speed, agility and ball skills. We won all our games by a huge margin. On and off field behaviour was exemplary and comments were made by senior Barbarian members what a disciplined team they were. Both coaches, Miss Mackay, Glen Rich (the ex Auckland forward who was our Barbarian’s support person) and the large contingency of parent supporters were so proud of the boys.
They then went on to play in the first of 3 days in Korbond Primary School’s tournament. We played against St Pauls (who had a 97kg player), West Harbour (who we have only won against once before in all the years of playing rugby) and Marina View. We won all games convincingly, despite a rum draw that resulted in our team having to play the 3 games in a row, with no break in between! Our forwards carried out a lot of hard work, controlling the game and linking with the backs. Our backs spread the ball allowing the Wings to score the majority of the tries. It was a real team effort and the whole team were the players of the day!
Thanks to the coaches for their dedication– Bruce Fearnley and Bruce Meyers, Julie Meyers for her work ringing around children, and the parents and Bruce Rich for their support.
Update 30/08
Yesterday the Hobsonville Y5/6 Tackle Team had another very successful day at the North Harbour Korbond’s Rugby Tournament. We played 3 games, winning against convincingly against Waitakere and Marina View and drawing against West Harbour. The whole team played brilliantly, putting 100 per cent effort into everything they did. They put into practise the techniques and skills they learnt in training, into the game. The game that really stood out was the West Harbour game, when they fought back against West Harbour who were physically much bigger, to draw the game. Having won all games and drawn 1, we have the highest points and it looks highly likely we will be through to the finals to play the winners of other Harbour zones.
