Library News 2011

Welcome to our library web page.

Our library plays a central role in the life of the school. It is well resourced and managed and we are proud of the progress that has been made over the last few years in bringing our school library up to the high standards it meets today.

The library has a variety of books spanning a wide range of levels and topics encouraging students to explore a full range of interests and genres. Classes are timetabled to visit the library once every 8 days. During this time students are introduced to the new books coming into the library and are encouraged to borrow books for personal reading. Classes use both the library and the adjoining computer suite for research and to work through the stages of inquiry. This year's inquiry is based around 'Communication'.

Our Fabulous Librarians:

Senior students are given the opportunity of becoming librarians which involves intensive training throughout the year. These dedicated students give up their morning tea and lunchtimes to help Mrs Hailstone, Mrs Makea and Mrs Sanders run the library. Over the year they work towards their bronze, silver and gold awards and these achievements are acknowledged at assemblies.

Opening Hours:

The library is open every morning tea and lunchtime for students to enjoy browsing and to borrow books. The student librarians often read to the junior students and the listening post is a very popular activity.

Book Fair:

We enjoyed a very successful Book Fair on 7th July. The students enjoyed browsing the selection of books on offer from Scholastic New Zealand and this year we were delighted to have Children's Speciality Bookshop, Next Page Please to cater for our senior students.I know many of you took the opportunity to talk to Maria about future reading for your children. Maria was impressed with the depth of knowledge the Year 7/8 students had about a wide variety of books.

We thank all the families who supported our Fair. Over the next few weeks we look forward to purchasing new books for our library!

Our students will enjoy new books kindly donated from the following families: Alisha Duthie, Madeline & Brianna Speck, Cameron Carter, The de Beus / Morrow Family, Nicole Miller, Abigail & Jamie Hyde, Sarah Wheeler, Tiffany Bunce-Leverne, Poppy Selby-Page, Maiana Patterson, Finnley Woolnough, Tia Anderson, Francesca Tolich, Alex Parton, Andrew Cross, Ben Stuart and The Makea Family,

Our author visits will take place early in term 3. We look forward to sharing details of this event with you nearer the time.

The students look forward to checking out the 'New Books' each week.
