Empowering Leadership

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

– Nelson Mandela

We encourage all our students to take every opportunity to put their hand up for leadership roles within our school. After all, today’s leaders may well end up being tomorrow’s leaders.

Library Monitor (Yrs 6–8)

Our Year 6 to 8 students can apply to be library monitors. Successful applicants are then trained throughout the year to assist with: issuing and returning of books, arranging shelving displays, shelve fiction and nonfiction, write book reports and other library duties. Library monitors are expected to turn up to their duties on time (morning tea and lunch breaks) and always be ready and willing to help. Librarians also need great communication skills to suggest good books to their fellow students.

Students interested in becoming library monitors, should apply in writing to the Library Manager: sharon.hailstone@hobsonville.school.nz

Road Patrol (Yrs 4–8)

Students can choose to be a part of this essential leadership group. The Police School Liaison Officer trains the road patrollers and they usually have one duty per week. The students are on duty in the mornings from 8.30am to 8.50am and then again from 3.00pm to 3.15pm.

If your child is interested in becoming a road patroller please contact: christine.pasfield@hobsonville.school.nz

Rangatira | Student Leaders for 2026

This prestigious role, similar to that of a prefect, is a new title for Hobsonville School, one that we are introducing to streamline and raise the status of Year 7/8 student leadership at our kura. All Year 7/8 students had the opportunity to apply to be a Rangatira, and we received a total of 32 very impressive applications.

This year’s Rangatira group comprises eight Year 8s (six female, two male) and four Year 7s (two female, two male) and the students in this mix have varying levels of experience in leadership roles and a variety of interest areas, e.g., coaching, culture, sports, arts, events, the environment, academics, wellbeing, etc. These 12 Rangatira will have responsibilities across the school that we will loosely group under these key roles: Sports, Culture, Events, and Environment.

Eight of the Rangatira have also been selected to represent Awa, Maunga, Kainga and Waka houses, which carries extra responsibility during school events, and in supporting the junior school students.

We are looking forward to seeing how this group works together and the positive impact they can have on our school and community this year and beyond.

Congratulations to the following Year 7/8 students who have been selected as Rangatira | Student Leaders for 2026:
