Learning with Digital Technology

At Hobsonville School, e-learning supports our students in becoming responsible, learners with an active curiosity about themselves and their world. Our school supports a digital citizenship model for the promotion of safe and responsible use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Our Digi-tech School Policy

While Hobsonville School acknowledges the importance of digital technology in the new world, we have strict policies in place designed to safeguard our students and limit their digital use. This ensures a balance of online time with other opportunities for students to learn and play. Our school policies are as follows:

  • NO BYOD (Bring your own device).
    – Years 1 to 4 have group use of a set of iPads (games are not permitted),
    – Years 5 to 8 use chrome books (leased by the school).
  • NO MOBILE PHONES IN TEACHING OR PLAY AREAS.
All phones should be handed into the office before school starts at 8.45am and can be picked up from 3.00pm.

Responsible use of technology

The school recognises that by fostering a culture of successful digital citizenship in our students, staff and community we are encouraging everyone to take responsibility for themselves and others in their use of ICT. This allows us to harness the potential that technology brings to the teaching and learning process, while minimising and learning to effectively respond to the challenges that may be experienced while using digital technology in a learning context. An important part of learning these skills is being given the chance to experience the opportunities and the challenges presented by technology in a safe, secure and nurturing environment, where clear, effective guidance can be sought as both students and teachers learn. The Board recognises that its obligation under the National Administration Guidelines extend to use of the internet and related technologies.

We see a responsible digital Citizen as someone who:

  • Is a confident and capable user of ICT,
  • Uses technology to participate in educational, cultural, and economic activities,
  • Uses and develops critical thinking skills in cyberspace,
  • Is literate in the language, symbols, and texts of digital technologies,
  • Is aware of ICT challenges and can manage them effectively,
  • Uses ICT to relate to others in positive, meaningful ways,
  • Demonstrates honesty and integrity in their use of ICT,
  • Respects the concepts of privacy and freedom of speech in a digital world,
  • Contributes and actively promotes the values of digital citizens.

Digital Citizenship User Agreements

Hobsonville School has developed and will maintain procedures around the safe and responsible use of the internet and related technologies (ICTs). These internet safety procedures (Digital Citizenship User Agreements) recognise the value of the technology and encourage its use in a teaching and learning context — while helping to minimise and manage the challenges that may be experienced by students, teachers and the wider school community. Incidents that arise will be dealt with in accordance with the school’s Behaviour Management Plan as the focus will be on the behaviour rather than the technology itself.

If you haven’t already done so, please read and sign the applicable ‘Digital Citizenship Responsible User Agreement’ with your child, and return them to their teacher.

Student Digital Platforms

We have a ‘school-wide’ focus on using digital tools constructively to enhance our students learning. We believe that setting solid foundations, in using ICTs effectively, is key for students to be able to participate and contribute to our society, today and into the future. It is clear that a key skill in this new world will be their ability to participate as effective digital citizens. So our students have access to learning and working with a comprehensive variety of digital platforms and tools.

Seesaw (Yrs 0–8)

Having whānau involved in the learning process is hugely important to us, which is why we use Seesaw. It allows students to engage, improve and deepen their learning across guided inquiry (science and social studies) and other curriculum areas. And allows their whānau a window into what their tamariki are learning at Hobsonville. It’s an amazing way to capture learning that has traditionally eluded any parent interaction. As a parent or family member you can receive notifications when your child makes a post to their journal (though the Seesaw parent app, free to download on any platform). If you don’t have access contact your child’s teacher for your invitation email to be sent.
